What could I use to make a small floating ring for a 5 gallon? The salvinia roots are growing way longer than I thought they should, making the tank very dark.

You could get a small styro foam ring from the craft store. They come in white and green. You could wrap the roots around it.

I've used pink house insulation foam board to make floating plant basket holders. I don't see why the rings from the craft store wouldn't work as well. Good idea FINWIN FINWIN . Also like Krismo962 Krismo962 said a ring made from air line works well too just make sure it's water tight.

I use floating tubing corrals in all my tanks, for two purposes: 1) Feeding ring that the fish get used to go feed from, and limits the falling food to a chosen part of the tank, and 2) Frogbit corral (or other floating plant), which keeps them growing happily but away from filters.
Airline tubing works fine. The polyethylene tubing (more rigid) used in setting up bathrooms, sinks or washer machines works very well if a slightly larger diameter is needed.

The styrofoam rings come in different sizes...larger ones are for DIY wreaths and are up to 14" across (imagine how that would look in a 300 gallon!)

Here's an example on Ebay:

I'd get it in green if possible. Or you could just paint it with Plasti Dip.
