ive done a lot of reading here and learned a lot thanks to all of you. i have two remaining questions about wet dry setups. i want to use a 55 gal tank for my filter under 300 gal tank. how do you start (prime) the filter flow, and how do you prevent flooding if the power goes out or the pump stops working?

Have you read http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101156 it goes thru all of your questions in detail.

Reader's Digest version...

You syphon the air out of the overflow tube(s) which will the stabilize the water height, then turn pump on and the cycle begins.

Flooding is prevented by allowing for the amount of water back fed from the pipes and the amount that the overflow is under water in the tank or where you placed the syphon break holes.
