I have a older house and want to put a 90g in my upstairs living room. I am concerned about the weight of the aquarium and whether I should be concerned about this. Is there anything I can do or checkout before putting the tank in the space?

hmmh how is your stand? try to spread the weight evenly as much as you can, try plywood under your stand to spread the weight.

I'm told most of the older houses are actually structurally stronger than newer ones. The materials used to day are not as robust as in days gone by.
not too sure about that...maybe some...In my house,4 yrs old, there are 2 by 12 floor joists...Dont know what more you would have had back in the "old days"..And a beam that is laminated together with 6, 2 by 12s...I think every house is individual and you need to investigate your own house....There are good builders and questionable ones....

actually if you go measure your joists...they are probably not exactly 2 inches by 12 inches, where as in the old days they were actually 2x12...another thing is to check how far apart the joists are from one another because the building code where you live might be different from where someone else is...its not so much about the builders either...most construction companys build stuff good however the amount of supports there should be aren't put there anymore because its not as quick, or cost effective...however you are right that everyones house is different and thats all that really matters
