I want to buy a friend's Florida Gar, but I have a few questions and concerns first

it's 12 inches, and I am told it eats pellets

currently the only tank I have for it is a 125, and it would be by itself in there. Is the 125 big enough for now? if so, how long until it would outgrow the 125, and what size tank do I eventually need, would a 72" x 24" footprint suffice?

thanks for any help

A 125 gallon aquarium (72" x 18" x 22", right?) will be large enough for that gar for decent amount of time, especially if the gar is not in its first year of life since gar growth usually slows way down after the first year. I would say that it would be good until it's 16" or so, and you should have a reasonable amount of time before it hits that size.

As for the final aquarium, a 180 gallon aquarium (72" x 24" x 24") is considered to be the minimum for a Florida gar, so the footprint that you mentioned will suffice provided that the aquarium is not unusually shallow for such a footprint (less than 18" or so).

180g is considered the MINIMUM but bigger is always better. As far as feeding, Floridas arent too picky once they get older. Try throwing in some carnivore sticks, if that doesnt work shrimp or tilapia fillets usually do.

in all practical sense, 180g tank will be fine for this particular gar in question for life. if you can go bigger it will be beneficial, but sticking with a 180g for life or for an extended period of time will be fine. good luck--

Im sorta in the same boat as you. The tank i will more likely will be getting is a 125g. I want a 180 but im not sure if my basement would be fine cuz of the weight. The floor is cement but its sorta old. Anyways, I have taken care of gars in the past but i dont remember if they are good at manuerving. I really want a florida gar in a 125 as well

i can definately get a 180 in the next year, not a question, just glad It's not tomorrow

i think I am getting the gar, the good news is that he may buy my africans in the 125 so I can get the gar in there.

would some pumpkinseed sunfish be ok with a gar? or do they need to be kept with other large predators?
