I came home from work today and seems like my young gar(7") is having a hard time staying upright. It is trying to swim but keeps barrel rolling. Does not seem to have any problem using it's fins as I can see it's trying to counter act whatever is causing it to flip over. No signs of bloat or injury. The gar was perfectly normal yesterday. None of the other inhabitants of the tank are having any issues. The tank is a 120g 2x2x4' pH 7.8 ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrates 40ppm 80°f , any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

check if the nose have sign of it banging again the glass or not. A young gar living in a too big of a tanks like that can lead to spine injury because the fish can build up speed and hit the glass causing injures.

His nose is fine, that's why I'm at a loss at what the problem could be. Also should add I've had this fish for a few months in a smaller tank, just recently added to this tank .

So just a quick update. After moving the gar into a 20gal for observation and easier medicating, I did a course of tetracycline and it seems better, not flipping all over, but still seems to not be able to turn well or move slowly, also seems to get swept by the current if he gets too close to the filters outflow. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey man sorry to hear that
This same thing happened to my Oscar
Treated him with tetracycline, methaline and salt
Infection tetra cyclone in to his mouth so it reaches his stomach and mix it with some of his favorite food

Treat the water with methaline blue and salt and do heavy water hanger
So that will ease his stress and will make him back to normal behaviour
Feed him plenty of food
