How big is their max size?

could I keep 1 ALONE in a 55G?

NO!!!!!!!!!
a 120g(4' by 2') would be good for a long time. they top out at 24" in home aquaria but more often u wont grow one that large. i keep mine in a 125g. it will be ok for a long time as well. u need at minimum(and u will have to upgrade) a 18" wide(front to back) tank. a 55g would be ok for a grow out till it is about 10" then i would up grade.

if u get it young and small GO FOR IT
but you will need to upgrade to a wider tank!
goodluck!

max captivity depends greatly on husbantry. but a safe estimate would be 20"

minimum sized tank would be a 5x2, larger is usually better, but nothing really extreme is needed. remember, with these fish width is usually more important. so go for a 5x3 rather than say an 8x2

thanks for the help you guys =) huess I will stray away from there because all i got now is a 4x1 but im getting a 75G (4'x1.5' or 18")
