Got up this morning and my gar looks like its sheading. What is that its about a foot long and is in the tank with a tsn and a jag. Only the gar has it happening. Was fine last night when lights went out going to do a water change what else can i do.

WC. big one. Now!! not in 5 minutes. NOW.

If you do a big WC right now, they should heal in a day or so. This is ammonia burn. Up ur WC and ull prevent future outbreaks

doubt this is ammo burn as the jag and TSN would likely show signs as well OR faster than the gar. sounds like it is sloughing off some of its slime coat for some reason...may be getting picked on by tankmates or there may be some other issue.

either way, doing a 50% water change, raising temp to 82F and adding 1 tbsp salt per 20g water would be beneficial. see how the condition goes from there--

hmm, ur prob right. Iv had this issue, but i only get it if i forget to do my WC. I do a WC and its fixed in the next day or two.

Just figured ammonia burn.

my Gar tend to be more sensitive to nitrates then even my spiney eels. def agree w/ the general advise given.. But i suspect elevated nitrate levels to be the culprit. either way you cut it a water change is deffinately not going to hurt. I would also test your water in general to make sure your tank is balanced correctly.

I agree with Sol ammonia burn would likely been readily evident on the Cat, with the Jag being the least obviouse.

did a wc before i went to work came home to this.....Not sure what it was but he was fine last night ate his sticks and this morning not so much. First fish ive lost in a few yrs that didnt get eaten or bail from a tank.

agree that water change would likely help the issue regardless, although ammo-burn usually presents first on the fins (frayed edges, redness) compared to the body.

agree in general that water change should help in almost any case, and water parameters should be checked. however, i have not really run into any situation where high nitrates affected gars' health. there may be something else correlated with high nitrates in your tank that is exacerbating this sensitivity, but stand alone high nitrates don't tend to affect gars in the slightest in my experience. keep us posted if your gars have issues again as it may be interesting to track (especially if they easily recover)--

your posts are generally completely useless with or without images.

to the OP - sorry about the loss of your fish, it may have been something too far gone to recover from or something internal that was undiagnosable until this recent slime sloughing presentation. gars are generally quite resilient, so hope you are able to try another one in the future--
