So i have done a bit of research and have read that florida gars grow up to 4 ft in the wild, but how big do they get in the aquarium? Does anyone have experiance with these fish? Any experiance or advice would be apreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

i got 3 florida gars. they grew from about 5" to 13" in about a year. who knows how big they get in an aquarium, but mine were always given proper living space and adequete food.

I have had them reach 25" in captivity but the potentional exists for them to get much larger. Usually they grow extremely fast the first year then 'plateau' out around 12 - 15 inches. They they grow quite slow taking about 4 or 5 years on average to reach 25 inches.

I have alot of experiance with these fish is there something in particular your curious about?

Over 30" in an aquarium would be large

You're right, Kuda. There's a long standing myth that fish only grow to the size of their tank. It IS true, but based on a warped sort of logic -- They always die before they get to the size of their tank ergo they don't outgrow their tank. Go figure!

There is a minor growth suppression effect that has been observed with some fish in small bodies of water, but that is essentially another case of bad logic -- It's the poor water quality from overcrowding that results in growth suppression.

If it helps anyone, mine grew from yolk sac fry to ~ 40cm in ~ 4 years. Pretty slow growth. Outdoors in subtropical climate, no heater, minimal direct feeding.

Now and again it will eat some pellets and it used to hand feed pieces of mullet and tilapia when it was in a glass tank as a juvenile. Subsequently it feeds itself on guppies and convicts.
