Curious if a Florida gar would be a suitable tankmate for discus at all. I have eight discus in a 120, with a juvenile stingray and a black ghost knife fish. I plan to build/buy a larger tank for the stingray sooner or later, before she outgrows the 120. Would the gar be ok to keep with the discus or better off waiting for the larger tank to happen?

Well, first of all, I don’t think it would be a good tank mate long term. Second, some states (like California) won’t allow u to have true Gar, so u need to check state regulation. Other than that, I don’t have anything else to say.

I can see it, but I would wait until you have a bigger tank. I think if you get a baby gar and get it on pellets, it could work. But I don’t have experience with any gar/related fish.

i have no issues with florida gar and discus

However, i think discus and rays may be an issue. i encounter angelfish being eaten by rays while they were pecking food off the tank floor

As far as I know, there is no law like that here in IL. A local store sells alligator gars

My stingray has bowled over a discus here and there but they've learned to stay away while shes eating. No one ever got eaten or even bit, just "tackled"
