Saturday i decided to go with a florida native tank since im from fl and dont have the first native fish. by the evening i ended up with 4 bluegills all differant sizes- 6in, 5in, 3in and one just over 2. lol belive or not my aunt caught the 2 in one on a hook. Now just need to get a cat and the tank will be near complete (other then plants) i'll post pics as soon as i can. anyways they took to the tank nicely. all are feeding on pellets and flakes :)

my question is can they be housed with a pleco. i know they are aggressive , especailly when its feeding time. i like to put a bristle nose pleco in the tank with them. just dont want to put in harms ways if you know what i mean. lol anywho any info the the bluegill would be great!

you basically deal with them as if they were cichlids when it comes to aggression. Pleco should be fine with them, just with all those sunfish and a pleco I'm assuming the tank is pretty big

it wouldn't fit in with the bluegills (unless you use them as feeders) but there are some very colorful mollies native to FL. i have seen them in springs while kayaking

I wouldnt add the mollies as they will get beat up or eaten by the bluegills

Actually IMO, a tank of smaller florida natives is much more interesting than a "big fish" setup. With all the native killies and livebearers there is quite a few setups one can come up with. you can also use something like madtoms in some setups, like with maybe flagfish. A lot of options are available looking outside of the more popular larger florida fish (bass, sunfish, gars. etc)

Well, I'm about to try the same thing soon out of necessity. I have two bluegill around 4.5" and a Pterygoplichthys Pardalis that will be going into a 65g tank soon. I say out of necessity because the only other tank I have set up right now that can house the pleco has my bichirs in it. If there are any problems I'll just have to re-home the pleco I guess. He's lived with Oscars before so I figure he's got a pretty good chance against the Bluegills. (crosses fingers)

My experiance with bluegills is they are like a jack dempsey agrression wise. One nice thing is they stay out in the open and cruise the tank like barbs do. Your pleco should be fine my bluegills (when I had them) use to just ignore the plecs.

cool thx. every one for the replys. i added a pleco and he seems to be doing good

i kept bluegills and are not really aggresive unless when feedind they feed ferosiosly and quick ? how do u put the little thing under ur name like urs ~8 tanks, 340+ gallons, 40 fish, and still want MORE!!! :)~ please message me how
