I'm stocking a 200 gallon (7-2-2) and currently have a silver arowana, clown knife, tiger oscar, and am considering a African lung fish and African arowana later but am not sure about those two yet. I'm wanting to know if a spotted gar would be ok with the fish I have already though and if anyone could explain in detail their behavior in an aquarium and towards other fish.

Ps the arowana and clown knife can be moved to a larger tank in several years if they outgrow it, but not before they outgrow this one

Thanks

I would recommend against getting a Florida gar, spotted gar, or any gar to go with that mix of fish. Gars are generally incompatible with shiny fish, so the gar would probably not get along with the silver arowana. The oscar might also pose a problem as far as aggression goes. Lastly, do not mix an African lung fish with other fish unless you're willing to risk the lives of the other fish; African lung fish love eating their tankmates.

i have 3 florida gars with a clown knife and silver arowana lol. the gars dont pay any attention to the arowana. the arowana is like 14" and the biggest gar is 11" and the clown knife is 14". when the are and arowana were the same size, i often heard splashing/arowana jumping at night. ive had this set up for 2 months and after the initial week or two, no aggression between gars and any of the other fish.

I had read about many people having trouble with keeping gars and silver arowana together, but I had also read about some success stories with the two fish. In the end, I decided to post what I did to be on the safe side. I guess the main thing is to observe your fish and see how the react to each other.

It's good to hear that you're having good luck with your gars and your silver arowana. :D

I have a Florida and spotted gar housed with a armatus and several bichirs. My gars are15in and my other fishes range from 8-13in. Everything is fine with my gars, the only thing is when its feeding time, when one of my other fish has food hanging from its mouth the gars would try to snatch it. Other then that they're fine

as a general rule shiny fishes should not be kept with gars..but I have 3 florida gars with my silver arowana and have never had a problem except for my aro being aggressive towards my gars once..now i am not recommending that you should try the mix but just sharing my experience with you.

I have 2 FL gars with 2 silver aros and they are fine together. Once the gar are converted to pellet they have no interest in the aros. There is a lot of misconceptions about gar (FL atleast) and this seems to be one of them.

thanks wiggles. it might also help if the silver arowana is bigger than the gar. i also find if they are well fed, they seem to be more mellow.

i dont know a bout them in tanks but theres a cannal behind my house and its loaded with them...although i could be confusing it with the florida gar but anyway thay are boring fish thay just sit there all day and you cant evan catch them other than snagging them

what you talking about them being boring. my 3 florida gars are like soldiers. they have a few formations and even do "follow the leader". they all hover side by side or lined up in a straight line. they are cool to watch when they do these.
