Florida vs Spotted

Ok so I have been reading threads trying to figure out how to tell the two apart. They are all saying that there is no way to visually tell the difference between the two. So what does make them different species? I read a couple of threads saying you don't know unless you cut them open. What's on the inside that makes them different

florida gars lack bony scales on the throat, which can only be seen if you cut out the opercular cover.
