State of chaos
can a Flounder (Hogchoker Sole) be kept in fw for life? i think a few people on here have TRUE freshwater Flounder...can it be dont without harming or shortening the life span of, the fish?

I have a flounder, i keep a low level of salinity around 1.005. the flounder has done well for over 6 mths.

What i want to know, is what the hell it eats? Ive never seen it eat in all the time ive had it.

I really want one... I'm thinking of adding a low salinty to my tank and then getting some BB gobies,Flounders and possible knight gobies or orange chromide..Wouls it harm FW fish if they were in slight brack ???

I keep my Hogchoker in light brackish, but I had a few people on aquariacentral.com say they kept their Hogchockers in FW for several years (fish still currently living). I don't know if it was harming or shortening the life span of the fish, but in the pictures the fish seemed to be growing well and looked healthy (active, eating well, growing steadily, etc).

If you want to keep a flounder in pure FW without any worry just get one of the Amazonian species which are occasionally available as large adults

throw in some live blackworms and then watch it eat. it's fun to watch them just devour those things, and i kept mine in brackish 1.008. (frozen bloodworms work too but not as fun to watch, just feed meaty foods)

I know an older thread, but wanted to add that I've had 4 for several months now in FW tank with clown loaches and a flowerhorn. Salt kept at standard 1tbls per 5g.....I have NO idea what they eat, but obviously well as they're growing pretty well. Busy lil'l buggers....feed cukes for the plecos, frozen bloodworms, algae flakes, etc
