I have long strip bulbs or whatever you call them on top of my tank. above a cover but i'm still of afraid of small splashed reaching them and shattering them.
can these types we use in aquariums shatter if water gets on them?

i had a friend who's heat lamp for a turtle break when the turtle splashed all over the tank. causing the bulb to instantly shrink and shatter

Flourecent bulbs do not get hot enough to break... plus you have a cover

i'm just saying like when i take the cover off for maintenance.
and if a fish splashes..
and the fog or fumes from the evaportaing tropical water might build-up water on the bulb...

they don't get hot even after 12hours? that's how long it's recommeneded right?

wait can we not even turn the lights on? just when guests are here?

They make safety shields (plastic tubes that slide over the lamps and are secured with rubber end caps. Here home depot and lowes or a commercial lighting supply house carries them.

Planted S/W reef tanks can use that much light but fish don't need it, 6-8 hrs is usually fine for F/W.

thank you Dr Joe.

why do i have to have it on though?

but if they're selling safety shields, then that means they do shatter?

Under normal circumstances, a shop light is overhead , so if your moving something or or sweeping and get carried away and don't watch the other end of the handle you could hit a bulb and break it. They also use them so the glass won't fall on what is below. Hence the term safety shield:screwy:.

You don't need to worry about a shield. Your bulbs aren't going to have a problem. I've had T12s fall into tank, while on, and no problems.

I use the shields Doc's talking about on all of my tubes but it's NOT because of them breaking due to heat and water splashing on them. I do it because my wife and I are monster fishkeepers and as we all know...monster fish can and do jump on occasion.

Personally I like the piece of mind from knowing that even if the bulb shatters... for whatever reason...that my fish are safe.
