so I'm about to start plumbing my 240g 8' long tank and was thinking about the flow direction. being that Bichirs come from rivers, maybe I should put the overflows and returns on the ends of the tank so the flow goes left to right instead of front to back? obviously the plumbing will be exposed which has its pros and cons. what is your guys thoughts?

Polypterus are found in lakes as well.

is there a list of which ones are found in lakes vs rivers? or are they just kinda in both not species dependent? from what I've read they've always mentioned rivers.

I get what you’re saying about a linear water flow to recreate a river of sorts.
But I believe that just having a good flow in general without any stagnant areas is all that really matters.
If you can create a flow that lifts and directs waste towards your filter intakes would be ideal.
That would be the reason to have a linear flow versus trying to recreate a river. Imo

well I think I'm going to have my overflow in the back center with a coast to coast weir. then run a couple wave maker jets on one end on a timer so a couple of times a day it gets a jet across the bottom to move waste back into the water column for removal.
