Hi everyone, I am a frequent reader of this forum but I don't post much. Now I have a good reason to... I need help. Just a few days ago I noticed that the flow from my fx5 was very low so I figured I would clean it out. Optimal flow returned for a day but then flow diminished quickly and then the pump started to make air noises. I waited a little while for the air to work its way through but it didn't. I opened it again to fill it up with water but the air sounds don't seem to go away and the flow remains at about 50 percent.

Is there any advice anyone can offer?

I have two FX5s on my 350. Whenever I turn them off to perform a wc, one of them gurgles a little for the first half hour or so after being turned back on. Yesterday, just for the hell of it, I closed the outlet for a few seconds while the pump was running. My thinking was that if I created backpressure in the impeller chamber, it might purge air. You know what...it worked. So, you might want to give this a shot.

Did you unplug the pump and try to restart the system? When I was researching other forums before I bought my fx5 I read several other posts where people had this problem. I believe one solution was to unplug the pump, wait about 5 minutes, and plug it back in.

Nevermind... I guess it would be hard to open the canister without unplugging the pump!

:iagree:...sounds like it might solve your problem! I'll have to remember this as well.

Monitoring this one closely as I have a new FX5 that I'll be setting up in a couple of days.

hey, I tried closing the outlet for a few seconds to try and build some back pressure and then when I open it it did force some air out. But that only seemed to work about three times and there was still air in the system.

Are your hoses leaking by chance? Also is your aquarium filled? The FX5 is gravity feed so levels are important.

when I shut off the pump the water from the aquarium immediatly started to syphon down into the filter and forced all the air out the outlet. Worked like a charm! Thanks aquafreak!

Its weird cuz I've tried to power off the filter before without this result. It might have to do with the fact that I was opening and closing the valves just prior to powering it off.

Anyways, it seems to be working great now. thanks again

do u use a polishing pad in the middle of the baskets if so remove them this happens with them all the time leave the middle baskets for bio media and the side sponges use them only trust me after some time the middle sponges in the center from all the pressure flatten out to the point where they slow down you flow it happened to me on both of my fx5's i dont use them just on the sides

clean the polishing pads/micro pads?
