just received my eheim pro 3e and have a couple of questions. currently i have the spray bar pointing down, but since im going to be using sand will this kick the sand up. my other question is what type of flow rate should i use. thanks in advance for the help.

It would take quite a strong return pump in order for the downfacing spraybar to disturb the sand below.I dont know how high your tank is but it's probably at least a foot high and most spraybars are near the waters surface where they can cause ripples and provide better oxygen.

Your spraybar should be positioned within 6 inches of the water's surface (submerged) and pointing towards the surface (at an angle) to help agitate the surface for oxygen transfer.

Yep and at twenty inches high the sand should be fine.

I have sand in my 29 gallon and a Rena Spraybar on a Fluval 304. The sand will get kicked up slightly just with this setup so on a Eheim P3E I am sure, depending on the depth of the tank and spraybar, sand will get kicked up if its pointing down.
