I am in the proccess of desighning a sump for my soon to be 640gal tank and i am having trouble with the whole flow rate part of it.
Acording to the sticky on pipe sizing flow rate a 1'' pipe has a 600gph flow and most of the submersible pumps that i come across is not following that.
A lot of people have sugessted mag drive submersible pumps to me but the mag drive model pm24 that runs at 2175 gph only has 1'' fittings in and out.
Can someone explain this to me before i make big mistakes on my sump build????

The flow rates in the sticky only apply to non-pressure applications. There are two sets of numbers for flow rates. One is horizontal and one his vertical for gravity applications. You can use whatever size plumping you want for the return just get the proper reducer coupling. For the drain you need to size your plumbing to handle more gph than you pump could handle at your head height so your drain is always faster.

thanks guys, im just new to the whole diy sump thing and just want to make sure i do it right the first time.
I also plan on running 2 pumps which will double up the number of drain pipes.
Im not worried about how it looks because it will be hidden in a overflow box so i can go even further on my drain size just to be sure.

Keep your 90° elbows to a minimum and use sweeps whenever possible instead. By doing this you can increase total flow through the system. ;)

Overflows & drains do almost the same thing, but they are 2 different concepts in this case... Which are you trying to build?

im not too good with the termenology of it but the tank has 4 holes that are 1-1/2'' in diameter drilled into the bottom of the tank that is also in the overflow box.
that is what goes to the current sump that is only a 29gal tank. I plan on building a bigger sump that is around 150gal but due to the height of the tank being 4ft. I am going to have to build it on the side of the tank so i can have the tank closer to the ground for the ease of cleaning. This may affect the flow rate of the over flow because it will have to travel up to get to the sump.
I wish the tank was drilled on the side of the tank to avoid this and i am hoping to not have to drill anymore holes.

What is the link for the flow rate thread?
