I have had my Blood Parrots for about two years and I have five of them in my 100 gallon tank. I decided to purchase a flower horn in hopefully that the flower horn would breed with one of my female parrots since the parrot males are sterile. I introduced the flower horn into my tank the other day and once he was in the tank he started with the lip locking with my biggest parrot for about five minutes they eventually it stopped. But now the flower horn stays to one side of the tank and now and then swims to the other side. But seems to be very shy at this point which I understand because he is new to the tank. My question is how long will it take before the flower horn becomes more friendly with the parrots?

I also noticed that the flower horn gets a little scared when I approach the tank at times. When he was in the store he was very friendly. I would appreciate it if someone could give me some good tips on caring for the flower horn.

Thank you,
Frankie G.

It sounds like your Flowerhorn is still settling in in his new tank. The fact that you have blood parrots in there with him is most likely making it harder for him to settle in. I would keep your lights off as that helps them settle in. Settling in can take as little an hour or as long as 2-3 weeks. Also keep an eye out for aggression from the parrots. Parrots can often team up against, pick on, and flat out harass flowerhorns that are new to their tank. Your Flowerhorn might not ever be friendly with you parrots. If the flowerhorn is able to establish himself as the dominant fish in the tank then the parrots will likely back down and not bother him. Any pictures of the tank?

Piranha,

After they had locked lips for about 10 minutes on Saturday it looks like the Flower Horn is settling in just a tiny bit. So far he has been getting around the entire tank. When he reaches the end where the parrots hang out they all just swim around in that end for a few minutes then the Flower Horn swims back to the other end of the tank. Right now he seems to go after one of the parrots. But just for a few seconds and then he backs off. So as far as I can see the parrots are not bothering the Flower Horn. I did what you suggested and
unplugged my lighting. The light only comes on when it is dark out and stays on for five hours. So since yesterday the light hasn't been on. I appreciate it that you are helping me out with my new addition. Also thanks for the video.

Piranha,

I forgot to mention that I will take pictures of my tank sometime this week!
