Hey guys, i currently own a 5 inch flower horn, male, i was thinking of adding a tank mate or two???? is this possible???? i have a 100 gallon tank at the moment, now the important thing for me would be if he does have a tank mate will it stress him at all??? i don't want him to have a tank mate if he is gonna be stressed all the time, i think that would be a miserable life to have to be stressed out 24/7 so what would u guys recommend??? tank mates or no tank mates???? thx guys......

i have tank mates with my flowerhorn and they all get along fine.

my flowerhorn is in with.
Convicts
2 pike cichlids
Clown Knife
Pleco
Catfish

everything is going fine so far. but i am getting more tanks and eventually he will have his own tank. well he will have half and my female will have the other half..

It luck of the draw. some will tollerate tank mates and some wont..

Mine won't tolerate tankmates anymore. I tried to put mine into my 240 long with my 2ft Arowana, and it went right after the Aro....chased it until I got his punkass out of the tank.:nilly: Now he's alone in a 55 gallon....and nows I needs a bigger tank....like always!!:irked:

It's a hit or miss. Keep a watch and if the mix doesn't work, separate as soon as possible. I'd suggest not trying it if you don't have any other tanks to accommodate the bullied fish.

The question lies more in what species are you exactly going to keep with him? In the FH's case, it is likely the reverse.

I've had FH's before but never went to picking up tankmates for them. I've refused knowing their personality will soon change and eventually cause disastrous consequences.

great advice Lupin.

may i ask penngomifan, what is the footprint of the tank? is it a 4footer or 6footer?

with a 6footer your chances of keeping other fish is increased. if it is a 4footer, then maybe some fast SD's might keep him busy.

another thing to remember not only with FH's. once segregated into a solo habitat, these fish are hard to "socialize" once again. meaning they do not "play" well with others.

however you could always get him a mate. to do this you must be certain that the sex is correct.

thx guys im set on getting him a mate, maybe a female red devil haha, i don't want to risk harm to the other fish nor stress mine out, plus i think he will enjoy having a female fish as a tank mate rather than some other fish, he is a pretty aggressive fish, he bites at the filters, and always jumps up to bite the lid, and if u put your face close he attacks it, the funny thing is my 2 year old daughter thinks the fish is showing love and giving her kisses lol, more like he wants to bite her face off, and least thats the impression he gives off with his gills all flared.... so do u think a female red devil will make a good mate??? Or should i stick to his own kind?
