i have two flowerhorns on each side of a divider, one male and one female. The female consistantly lays eggs, but when i open the divider they just lip lock n swim around in circles, until i seperate them again. That didnt work so the next batch of eggs i switched the male to the female side with the eggs and the female to the male side with no eggs (duh) but the male just eats the eggs. So how can i get the male to fertilize the eggs?

I think you may have to let your pair sort out their differences, he needs to be there WHEN she lays the eggs, so that he can fertilize them. If I remember correctly cichlid parents BOTH care for their young.

You might need to just get another male to try it w/. My friend and I just had some red devils breed and after the eggs were fertilized, the male beat the crap out of the bigger female. My old breeding pair of midas did the same thing so you might want to divide them after the eggs do get fertilized...

Is there a reason that you keep them separated? If not, I would let them do their thing together so they can get a brood going.

Yea,FH's are maniacs so he probably seperated them so scales and blood would populate the tank.

...i put them together before she laid any eggs cuz i thought she might in the next couple days and all they did was lip lock so can the male just fertilize through the divider? Will he do it since they don't particulary like each other?

naw dude u need to combine them. I tried this in every possible way and now im trying with the divider out and every view block I can find to put in the tank. The female is looking ****ty but shes swelling up with eggs now.

so your saying i should take the divider out, put a bunch of decorations in the tank, let them kick the **** outta each other, and that will hopefully end with eggs?? .....the female beats the male up....if that makes any difference to the equation

how bigs the male and how bigs the female? when female fh's lay eggs they get very very mean and tend to beat the **** outa the male ( if hes smaller ). always try and do the female 1/2 the size of the male.
