So I just picked up my first FH's over the weekend at the MD MFK meet we had. I grabbed 5 from gokuson4 (search his threads to see the parents) And I've been doing a bit a reading up on the because I want them to turn out as nice as possible, Just started this thread to hear some tips on raising them to make them look their best. Things like what foods you feed, I've read that certain lighting gives their skin what it needs to really bring out their color. Things like that.

You're input is much appreciated. I'll try to get some pics of the babies (1.75") tomorrow and post them here.

Thanks!

bright gravel I hear helps, although I have not tried this yet. I am a natural tank person and that is a morta sin in my book LOL. Bright backgrounds help. Varied quality diet. 2-3 different quality pellets, treats like krill, mysis, crickets, raw shrimp, bloodworms, mealworms, etc are also very good. Super clean water, and some crushed coral in teh filter/tank also helps. Flowerhorn tend to do better in higher ph. 7.4-7.6 is ideal IMO. Anaxtacin helps bring the red out, chingmix, and hikari are 2 pellets that contain anaxtacin. NLS contains other caratonoid pigments that are creat also. Shrim/krill are very high in anaxtacin.

I've got them eating NLS Cichlid formula now, going to pick up some Bio Gold and Cichlid gold.

How about the lighting, I've read that some UV really helps their skin and brings out the best in their color. Could I use a reptile bulb on their tank. If so how much UV is enough? Too much?

If your looking to bring out the blue/green use a 50/50 actinic with a regular powerglo or allglass bulb. I have found that the allglass bulbs do pretty good on their own though. The diet above is what I use as well, just not the ching...to many mouths to feed. Bio-Gold / Gold and Staple with Krill every other day. Fresh shrimp cut to size and raw fish bits and most all of mine like Algea waffers as well. Any bugs that I catch outside go in the tank allso. Babys get NLS / Frozen Brine - Mysis - Cyclops and NLS Grow out once big enough with mini Hikari Bio and Gold. Variety is key, and Blue background. All my tanks use natural gravel as well.

when feeding shrimp should you feed it with or without the shell? Also, has anybody used extreme aquatic foods Cichlid Diet? I have read good things about it, just wondering what everyone else thinks.

One more thing (sorry for the dumb questions) When feeding vegetables, should they be fed right out of the frige or should they be boiled first? I have heard that romaine lettuce and brocolie should be boiled before feeding to fish.
