I have discovered the Flowerhorn recently  . That may sound funny, and understandably so, but I've become very interested in them and was wondering if they could be mixed with other medium sized cichlids like JD's and Salvini? I have heard horror stories about their agression but heard the same about GT's too and the one i have is a sissy.

Also Is the flowerhorn a cross or mix of two different cichlids? Are they still considered a South American/Central American Cichlid?

Anybody have one that could offer some info?

Sorry, I usually read a lot about a fish before even thinking about getting one, but I couldn't find much about keeping them in the cichlid "community" set-up. I'm just curious right now so any info or links would help greatly :grinno:

Thanks everyone!

These fish are hybrid....Many strains are out now...But I beleive some of the "original" late 90's Flowerhorns were crossed between Trimac and Midas...

So I'm outta luck I think. Thats OK. They're pretty cool and you have to admire the attitude in such a small fish. What would be the minimun tank size? Don't they gat around 10-12" or do they get larger than that?

Back in the day, I guess at the peak of its popularity, I "discovered" the Flowerhorn back in 99-2000...Many hobbyist down played this hybrid, but I too was intrested and wanted to feel what the hype was all about....I bought a pair that cost me $200...Both fish were barely 5-6 inches, but the color was amazing....I asked the same basic questions on the internent on what to expect and what to do with these fish...Pretty much, treat these fish as your ordinary cichlid....If raised from young age(1-4 inches) with other fish, then you have high chances that it will turn into a community cichlid....But, if raised alone(not paired), then you'll have something along the lines of a Red Devil/Midas on steriods....

You got it...These fish easily max out at 10-12"...They easily growout in cramped spaces, but give the fish at least 60g's to play and stretch out in...

You can get less expensive flowerhorns, theres a pretty nice one @ my lfs for like 32.99 and he is a nice 5 inches nice and thick already starting to get his hump

Familiarize your self to where the Hybrid thread is,cause i gaurantee a mod is gonna move this................but you know what, even if you score a low-grade Flowerhorn your gonna be pleased when the Kok grows out.(The Kok is the nuchal hump looking thing on it's head)Good Luck:D

Sorry for posting in the wrong area. Still learning my way around. never knew it was a Hybrid. thanks for straightening me out.

Don't think a Flowerhorn is in my immediate plans. Picking up the 90 gallon Thursday night or Sat morning, not sure yet. But, I don't think adding a fish like that would be a good idea right now with my current set-up.

Do you?
JD, GT, Firemouth, Salvini....biggest fish is JD who's almost 6" others are 2 1/2 - 3"
