Any good quality commercial feed will get the job done, personally I have always been a fan of NLS. Over the years I have raised several FH on a diet of same.

I personally recommend any Okiko brand specifically for flowerhorn.
I've only ever fed my dude the Okiko brand and check him out. File attached on bottom is whenever he was a little guy.

What you are seeing is genetics at play, not some kind of voodoo FH food magic.

+1 -- nice looking FH but you would have achieved same or better with many other brands. And then insofar as long-term health, who knows what affect that "Special Head Growth Enhancing Ingredient" will have, esp. with the Platinum Head Huncher & Color Faster pellets, which have a whopping 60% protein -- significantly higher than those I give my (carnivorous) Arowana.

Only reason i recommended that brand is because that's all I've ever used.
No issues health wise as of yet. (knock on wood)
Got that CLEAR on deck just in case.

While there are more premium brands like NLS, Northfin etc. I personally would put Hikari way above Okiko, you might try some to give your FH more variety. Would suggest Cichlid Gold, Biogold+ & Bloodred Parrot+.

If we're talking about color, specifically red, then carotenoids in the diet are important because fish can't synthesize them. They can convert between them only.

Most commercial diets seem to be loaded with astaxanthin already though so I don't know if more astaxanthin or the addition of other carotenoids would accomplish anything.

I'm going to contradict my last statement only because i mix Hikari Blood-Red Parrot+ as well. Mainly use Okiko tho. May give the NLS a try. I use NLS in my reef. FANTASTIC brand
