My flowerhorns laid eggs, they stayed brown/golden for 2 days or so then started to gradually go white one after the other. The fungus then began to grow as the female then slowly ate the eggs.

My questions are:

If the male was infertile, would the eggs have stayed white to begin with?
Could this be because they're both young and their first time laying?

I want to get fry from the female as she is of high grade, so I need to know the chances of the male being infertile or if you guys think that the eggs would've been white all along etc.

Thanks in advance as always!

Yes if male is infertile then so would the eggs. Also it's a possibility that the male didn't fertilize the eggs. Did you observe the spawning?

Nah they were pretty shy about me being around and kept stopping when the female got to laying so I left them to it :D

I'm also aware if the male is infertile, the eggs would be. My main question is, would the eggs ever turn golden/brown(not white) if they were never fertilized.

Yes unfertilzed eggs will be Amber but after a day will start to fungus and turn white. Only fertile eggs will remain the golden brown color you described.

Ah right okay, thanks. Some of them even stayed that colour for like 3 days and then turned white or almost translucent ):
