What do you feed your flowerhorn as a low protein diet? Pellet food made for flowerhorn is mostly high in protein. I have heard mixed review about high protein isn't good for the fish and may cause damage in the future.
A protein level above 44% is completely pointless and in fact stressful on a flower horns stomach. There are so many foods out there that promise different results usually related to better pearls, bigger head, better growth, better breeding, more red. Some foods use hormones and chemical additives to unnaturally bring out better results. Sadly these results can and have killed many flower horn usually from liver failure. The first thing that every flower horn owner needs to know is that a fish's genetics has the biggest impact on pearls, head, size, and color. The next most important thing is the care you give to keeping the flower horn in ideal water conditions. I have been using a verity of flower horn foods since 2002-2003 when I got really into this subspecies. Best foods I have used in order of most favorite. 1st JBL Novo Flower Maxi. Its a german based company that makes this food and they really focus on the science of what a fish like a flower horn needs. I have witnessed incredible kok results with KK's eating this food. 2nd Grand Sumo. They keep there food simple with high quality ingredients that all my flower horn devour in seconds. Grand Sumo also has an incredible effect with making pearls very shinny and shimmery. 3rd: Hikari Bio Gold Plus. This food has wheat germ which is very healthy for a flower horns intestinal track. I have also watched three females I had all drop eggs after exclusively eating this food for 20 days. I would use any combination of these foods for great results. Every 4-5 days I also feed frozen bloodworm and finely chopped up cooked shrimp.
Tetra Pro looks like it has a lot of garbage fillers like Wheat Gluten, Corn Starch, Corn Gluten. Those are all inexpensive binder products. I wouldn't use it personally, but thats just my opinion. Grand Sumo is an amazing food so awesome job choosing that one. Freeze Drilled Krill are good as long as you soak them in aquarium water for 3-5 mins before you feed them. After I soak them I break the into smaller pieces to make them easier to digest.
