My golden base flowerhorn gets spooked really easily. We had him for a month and half now. Initially he was hiding in the behind the filter but after 3 days he was fine and was chasing my finger. 2 weeks ago, after coming back from a 2 days trip, he gets spooked easily after seeing us and hides in the top corner. After feeding he becomes fine again, but after few hours sometimes days he becomes spooked again.

What could cause this? Is it this fishes character?

He is actively eating, swims around happily after 10-20mins of us sitting in the same room.

How big is the tank?
It doesn’t look like there are a lot of hiding spots in the tank. Cichlids are naturally prey for birds and other land animals, so without plenty of cover they will feel constantly exposed and become very skittish.

It's a 75 gallon tank. I put in a huge barrel for him to hide in. I keep a bare bottom tank

Try adding some form of floating cover.

That's normal for some newer fish especially if u were gone for a bit and they don't see any movement for a few days. I always have to approach my fishes in the main room slowly until they are comfortable and are established. If not at any fast movement they will go crazy and get spooked fast.
