I've been reading that certain foods can help with the growth of the flower horns kok. Or is it basic genetics?

It genetics... Food can help maximize his potential but without some good genes food won't provide any miracles.
It all comes down to genetics. If your fish has the genes for it there are things you can do for it to reach its max potential.
