Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the kind of flowerhorn I have, and maybe the sex. Ive read the black on the dorsal fin indicates female but not positive if thats a hundred percent. Thanks. FH.jpgFH1.jpgFH2.jpg

it's a red dragon...definitely could be a female. probably have to vent to be sure

Thanks guys, so will her color become more bright and vibrant when she matures, or is she going to stay this dingy brown color?

you won't know until you grow it out =D how big is it currently? does look female, but I'm not sure that's an accurate statement for flowerhorns about the dorsal fin dot.

Shes about 2 inches and Ive had her around 3 months. She isnt always that dark. I was near the tank and she was chasing all the other fish around. She gets dark when shes mad. She pretty much runs the tank, aside from the red devil.

she will eventually kick the red devils ass more than likely. 2 inches, yeah there's plenty of time to see true potential. 7 inchers should be a pretty good indication of how it's going to look. The dark bars are like you said, either anger or stress. The green on the zz strain is very common and some are lighter/darker than others. I never get rid of my flowerhorns based on how they turn out, but I do notice that when you grow them out, only then can you truly see it's potential. Don't get me wrong though, when a flowerhorn shows very nice patterns and colors at a young age, they are typically grade A or high quality flowerhorns and they do tend to turn out beautiful.

Most of us buy flowerhorns from the lfs, so you typically find low-grade to med-grade flowerhorns available. These are the ones that need time to grow and show.

i.e. I had a "female" displaying no hump, about 7-8 inches, didn't bother venting as I don't really intend on breeding anytime soon. Over a span of 1 month the kok blew up out of nowhere, so it was actually a male lol.

another case i've had flowerhorns display crap coloration/patterns, and as it aged the red had covered 80% of the body. When I initially watched them grow, I never thought they would end up the way they did.

I don't know if those are good examples of what I'm trying to say, but yeah =D
