Hey guys/gals. So i stopped by my local petco today and they had 2 flowerhorns for only $14 each!! The one i chose and one that literally had no color at all and was pretty beat up. Anyhow the label only said flowerhorn. I was wondering what kind it is. I tried to indentify it from google pictures but didnt get very far. Also will it gain color as it grows? What is a typical growth rate, per month/s inch wise? And shouldn't there be a hump, the google pictures show even the little ones having em. Thank you in advance.

Looks like a ZZ Dragon bro. It's still really young and has a lot of coloring up to do, which it will happen pretty quick if good water parameters, feeding etc. I can't put a figure on the growth rate but if it eats well (but don't overfeed) it's going to start growing like a sprout soon.

Too early to tell for sure about the hump, but it's possible it's a female (that said I can't really tell from your pix if it has any black markings on its dorsal fin (which often indicates it's a female).

Depending on it's personality you might eventually have to get him/her their own tank, it might get increasingly aggressive with the other fish, just watch to see how they all get along but be prepared that you might have to move some fish. Good luck and show us some updates later as it grows out more.

Yeah the bottom fin is outlined in black. Thats awesome that it'll gain more color. Its already the best looking fish in my tank. Its loaded with the neon blue spots and the fins are all more red now that its settled into the tank. I can deffinetly foresee future aggression. Its personality almost reminds me of an oscars. But yea im sure ill be updating pictures as time goes on.

So i was reading about how foods high in fat oils help develop the hump that most flowerhorns have. I picked up freeze dried meaworms. They have 48% protein and 26% fat/oil, are these okay to feed it? I also got freeze dried baby shrimp. The label says they help bring out pink, orange and red colors. All of my fish love both of these. I was wondering how often to feed those? Before i got that i normally feed them daily a mix of hikary gold growth, hikary gold red bag and shrimp pellets. I have them mixed an feed in small amounts twice a day. Then i give frozen blackworm 'gum drops' twice a week. Looking for input on how often i should give them everything that way i dont over or under do it.

To me it looks like a type of classic kamfa flowerhorn. The white or yellow eyes are a dead give away that it's a kamfa of some sort. Looks nice so far. Give him or her some more time to grow to see if it has head genes or not.

Looks like a super red kamfa monkey to me. Or could be a kamfa dragon with some red texas in it.
I dont think it will grow too fast, the eyes are taking up more than 1/3 of its face and fins are short. Stick with a good staple pellet like omega one super color cichlid, hikari bio gold plus, nls cichlid or thera +.

Thanks guys. I seem to here alot of good things about the omega one line, ill be making an order soon. It seems like every day shes looking better and better, that or i spend so much time watching her that im losin it haha the blue doesnt come from a die does it? Awhile back i got a bright green parrot fish. 3 months later he turned bright orange an completely lost the green.

I don't use the Omega One but I do love Hikari Bio Gold Plus as a primary food along with other high quality pellets, frozen bloodworm, finely minced cooked shrimp, and cooked blue claw crab. In terms of the genes in your fish I can tell you that from my experience this little guy or girl has a ton of Synspilum Vieja in them. The blue or pearls is not from a die, those are natural markings and will not fade away. As your fish settles in, becomes happy in its new environment, and probably becomes the dominant fish of the tank its colors will continue to look brighter. Your parrot fish faded, thats why it lost its blues. Totally normal transition for a parrot fish to do, don't worry its very very doubtful this fish will do that.

Flowerhorn hump is solely based on genetics. Keep your water clean, feed a high quality pellets and don’t go crazy on the treats and keep us updated.
