When will I know if my flowerhorn is going to develop a kok or not? He/she is about 2 1/2 inches long and has not yet developed a Kok. Just wondering.

Males tend to develop them earlier, but nobody can say for sure when it will happen. The formula is going to be based primarily on genetics of your fish, diet, water conditions, and stress. Keep a happy, well fed, fish in clean water that has good genetics and your fish will be at its best.

There are lots of opinions on what 'the best' food, water conditions, etc will be as well. Do your research. There are also many that have turned around a 'bad' fish they recently acquired and a few stories where one person was taking care of a fish just fine but it grew a nice kok after another person buys it - and between the two people there really was no change in how the fish was cared for, it may have just been aging. Post some pics too, or at least take some for yourself, it's much easier to see progress if you take a photo of the guy at least once a month.

Im fairly new to with flowerhorns so correct me if im wrong ppl.... It all depends on the genetics of your fish, for instance ive seen FH that are 3 inchs with a kok the size of a golfball, but then i have also seen 8 inch males with a slight hump. Also if you havr a female it wont grow a kok like the mall will.

Females usually don't grow much of a head anyhow, though there are a couple I've seen. Genetics will play a big part of it, but good genetics won't help if the fish is always stressed, in poor water, with cr@p for food.

Let's not forget, some of the small 3" fh with big heads are also being induced with hormone treatments here to get that big head or bright color. I'd personally rather have a nice fish with a smaller head than a fish with a big head that's been jacked up on 'roids.

Ok, thanks guys. I am feeding him Cichlid gold pellets, krill, crickets, and an occasional feeder or two...any other foods I should add for him?

I always quarantine my feeders, and I noticed much quicker growth when fed live feeders in comparison to pellets, krill, brine shrimp, earthworms...etc. Besides the growth aspect though I do agree 100 percent they can cause aggression, diseases, fatty liver tissue buildup, among other problems.

It all depends on the genes of the fish. With a FH of such small size, it's always a gamble as you don't know how they will look and whether a kok will form when he grows bigger. Just be sure your water is in top notch condition, temp is high enough, etc.
FH foods such as Grand Sumo or ChingMix will also help bring out growth, but if your FH doesn't have the genes, even the "enhancing" food staples won't bring it out.

A mirror might help if you use it for 30-60 mins a day, it'll help bring out the aggression and bring his colors and head out.

I would recommend staying away from feeders, IMO they bring nothing but parasites and next to no benefits.

totally agree with most cichlids, its pointless, cruel and presents to many risks to the hungry fish! IMO unless its needed as part of a fish's main diet, its peoples sadistic way of adding fun to there tank.
