so my flowerhorn i got him last august. he hasnt really seemed to grow since. its been like 9 months and barely any growth. i feed him 20 hikari pellets 2x a day, but before when i first got him i was a noob didnt know what i was doing. Put him in a 110 gallon tank with 2 large filters. i change his water like every other week or so. Sometimes i forget to feed him and i dont do his water change for awhile. I also didn't really give him a heater during the winter until i realized the one heater i already had wasnt enough because he was turning grey and stuff ,so i got 2 heaters. his belly seems to have a bulge in it, like hes bloated or just ate alot or something. its a noticeable bulge too.. i am wondering am i doing anything wrong, besides the noob mistakes i made when i first got him.. btw hes a SRD short body flowerhorn. Has a nice hump and nice colors, but i havent seen much growth. i think he was 5.5-6 inches when i bought him. any suggestions? i heard the bigger they get the slower they grow, but i saw a guy on youtube who had masterpiece flowerhorn who grew to within 10-12 inches within a year?!?! thanks for your help.

Yea short bodies dont get very large. They can live in a 55g or a 40 breeder for the whole lives. Regular fh's get 10-12 inches while short bodies can get to around 10 inches but most peak at around 6-8 inches.

oh. man i bought the wrong one then dam it. i wanted one like 10-12 and with a nice hump and stuff. Like a masterpiece, the ones you see on youtube. should i buy another flowerhorn and put it in there with him? with a divider of course. i have a 110 g.. or would i need to buy another tank and separate the 2? i thought short bodies could grow up to the same size...

If you give the regular fh 65% of the tank I think it would be fine. A full grown fh needs a minimum tank size of 75 gal so I can see it working but the real problem is making a divider that can withstand the force of a fh. Suction cups and also a thick layer of gravel is needed to keep it in place. I used lighting diffuser with just friction to hold it and once they hit 4 inches they were strong enough to knock it down and go at one another and I made sure it was really wedged in there good lol.

if he has a bulging bellie he could be constipated, feed him some shelled cooked peas to get things moving. also do your water changes every week for growth and fish health... its a known fact the cleaner the water the faster fish grow, i grew a red terror male from two inch too 11 inch in 9 months in my 300 with weekly 50% changes... as other said tho it could be its genes but ive seen sb over 10 inches here in the uk!

isnt 50% too much? i do around 25-30% no more no less. i have 2 really good filters its over filtrating the tank already. plus its only one flowerhorn in there for now lol. and i do my water changes every 2 weeks sometimes almost 3 weeks.

I do 90% w/c's weekly to keep nitrates at 10-15ppm. You can do 100% water changes and its fine as long as you gradually increase the amount of w/c's done and also match the temp/ph.
