Hi all. I love flowerhorns. I find them really pretty and LOVE fish with nuchal humps. Naturally, I am attracted to them. My question is as follows: Bichirs are I would say my second favorite. My family frequently goes on vacation or travels whenever we can, and most wkends we go to long island. Would my flowerhorn be ok with that? I have trained my friend in the building in the art of waterchanges and feeding. He would be able to come every other day. Would that be enough for a flowerhorn? or would the bichir be a better canidate? I know flowerhorns are fragile.....

I also LOVE chubby yellow plecos and was maybe thinking of doing a whole display tank just for them. Would a 75 work? For the plecos this would be next year since they are expensive, and to afford them I will need a summer job! Or just doing chores around the house!

if you go on vacation a lot, I would recommend a bichir. I have a wild caught Nigerian lapradei and she’s okay without food for 2-3 weeks as they are more prehistoric creatures and are imo hardier than other fish. I don’t have any experience with plecos so couldn’t tell you anything about that so hopefully someone chimes in. Also, flowerhorn is a solo fish so if you want anything else, a flowerhorn will fight and probably kill its tank mates. Good luck!

Since Flowerhorns are your favorite I recommend you go with that. Since you and your family like to take frequent vacations you could buy a autmoatic feeder to feed it everyday as the normal procedure. The friend could come do your water changes as you said as well. But as other members have previously said having an Flowerhorn means it would have to be the only fish in the tank due to it's aggressive nature. I have had a Pleco and they can go a lot longer without food in my experience with them if your friend in the building were ever to get out the picture. They're also much more hardy in my opinion. Now the choice is really up to you, wish you the best!

also I forgot to mention during the summer we go to long island. I am not sure If I could bring the tank with me. My friend would be able to watch it.
To be honest, your lucky to have such a handy friend, lol. He's the backbone of this. My signature showing it's truth.
