So I have been wondering, they say that Flowerhorns were created through crossing a Trimac with a blood parrot. From that initial crossing, there have been MANY new strains produced. My main question is where did pearls come from in Flowerhorns, what was crossed into the mix to produce pearling? Carpintis/Texas blood? If anyone has any information that would be very helpful!!

I believe the pearls come from their trimac ancestors. Trimacs sometimes will have pearls on their body and fins and I believe this trait was further strengthened with consistent breeding and culling of other undesirable traits.

Also even tho there are several different types of FH's that were made with different crossbreeding combinations, every single one has Trimac cichlid as one of the bases for it's Gene's. Kind of like with how Red Texas may be either made by using a Texas cichlid, Carpinitus cichlid or a Flowerhorn but will always be made with some extent of Blood parrot DNA thus the red to orange coloration.

Magnus_Bane Magnus_Bane Ruturaj Ruturaj I know selective breeding was due to the majority of line breeding, I had just never seen a true Trimac with much pearling. I just had an accidental breeding between my golden base male flowerhorn and a blood parrot. I have some vieja hybrids I want to breed with the blood parrot and flowerhorn as well. I’m going to grow out this batch and hopefully get something nice out of it. My flowerhorn has very little pearling throughout the body though so I am wanting to bring some more pearling in

If your looking to breed in more pearls I would recommend getting a Carpinitus cichlid as they tend to have awesome pearling on them while keeping that trimac body style.

Magnus_Bane Magnus_Bane i would like to bring some pearling in, I don’t know what genetics the flowerhorn not the blood parrot will throw. If nothing nice comes from this batch of fry then I will be buying a red spot gus from a seller in Thailand. Nice red pearling in them, or a fireman’s dream flowerhorn from Wuddy. He has some nice juveniles for good prices right now. I want to keep flowerhorn/vieja blood. I don’t want to introduce any Texas or carpintis if I don’t have to

Veija would definitely work I would think. Fireman's dream FH would also work nicely as long as it's got nice pearling. Ik I have a FH atm that ppl have asked me if it was a fireman's dream but mine was home bred so it was just a kind of happy accident. The father was a red dragon while the mother was a red dragon/fader, the FH I posted previously was one of their children along with this lil lady here. Wish she had some better color and pearling and was a lil bigger but she still looks better then her big sister does imo, and yes they are from the same batch of fry even tho they look nothing alike. This girl ended up being named Star. Been thinking of getting a Carpinitus myself to get some fry with better pearling, just don't find em for sale all that often here.

Magnus_Bane Magnus_Bane that is a gorgeous female fader! Mines just your basic kind of “low grade” fader I bought for $50 at an lfs and am growing out for fun. If I go with a fireman’s dream I’ll be picking from a group at Wuddys farm in Thailand. I just want to see what these fry turn out looking like, they hatched yesterday and the mom moved them to a safe spot, I saw the dad move a few as well. For the most part he guarded the eggs and fry while the mother moved them, I’m just glad to see them both being good parents for it to be their first time. When should I separate them from the parents?

You can separate em as soon as they are free swimming or as late as them getting to .5in in length.
