I'm going to be looking at wide variety of Flowerhorns on Saturday at a breeders facility. I originally inquired about his ad for fry and he informed me that he has many different sizes and strains to choose from. He hasn't gotten back to me on specific types yet. My questions are......................

Should I get a handfull of fry and raise up to keep the best if I see the parents?

Should I just get one promising looking juvie?

What am I looking for in a promising fish?

I know that I don't want to buy a 1000$ AAA quality fish. I would like a impressive looking fish with loads of personality. I taken a look at many different strains and they are all beautiful to me. Just looking for a good size forehead, big in size and nice colors. Something that will look impressive in a one fish tank. Any tips or pointers would be great guys. Maybe where I can go online to see a good variety. Pics of babies then and now? Any help would be outstanding! Thanks in advance.

how much is your budget?tank space? willing to spend on fish(money and time)? IMO i think its easy(though can be expensive) for a beginner to start with an young adult-adult fish. all you really need to do is to buy quality food and perform water changes. adult fish(specially FH) are alot hardier, so you dont have to worry about them getting sick easily.

i would look for a fish thats atleast 4-5 inches, look for clear clean red eyes, fins, tail, the works...color and variety is really to your own preference (whatever floats your boat). have fun with the breeder, dont get rip off, you dont have to buy on the spot, you can take pictures and post it here so we can help you pick (;

my 2 cents

it's hard to see potential on a small fry so probably try to get what pleases your eye at least 5pcs and hope you got it for cheap it's easy to point the parents they can just point on any thing.

try to pick the one's with a shorter body and shorter snout, but buying small flowerhorns is really a risk...u get what u pay for. goodlick!!~!

Thanks for all the feedback guys! The breeder recently got back to me on the strains of his breeders and assured me that the fry are absolutely from a single pair that bred recently. He thinks they will be show quality, but Like I said" I don't care about show quality". I just want a nice looking massive flowerhorn or two. The info he gave me was the female is a double row blue dragon and the male is a pearl golden monkey. He is also sending me pics of a couple other pairs that he hasn't bred that are red lion and red pearl. The fry he has are 5$ a piece and his four inchers from a previous breeding of the pair for 35-80$. I think that I'm going to get 3 fry and a nice 4-5 inch male. When I get pics I'll post them for feedback. Thanks again.

if the mother is a double row pearl and the father is a golden monkey, chance are you will get frys with lots of pearls but not much in the hump department.

If you don't have the tank space, then pick one that is around 3.5"+ that you like. If you get 5 juvies and you put them together, overtime, you will only have 1 or 2 left in the tank. They will kill each other.
Depending on what you're willing to spend and how much money you have, spend a little more for a quality FH that you can devote more time and more tlc to.

i would say buy what u like.. u can always post the pics here though :) if u are not looking for a big head then go for it.. i personally dont like gigantic heads... :)
