Anybody know where I can attain some Flowerhorns in the greater seattle Tacoma area? Also what you guys recommend as a spring board strain? I enjoy all the color variations, but not the huge KOK that some can get. I am looking for one that will get big and impressive, but not a mutant with a giant forehead. Bulky and pretty. Can you guys point me in the right direction as to to what my be up my alley? I understand that the large KOK is a feature that most strive for, but my preference calls for something a little more subdued. Thanks in advance.

flowerhorn's are very beautiful, but also very agressive.buy what u like,in terms of color, size.most lfs should have flowerhorn's/queens/all the other variations.you can also buy on line...

yes search around and you would be better served to get what you are looking for on line that just settle for something you might happen across. I was the same way you are feeling back when I transitioned my focus to FH years back. I had always keep the traditional cichlids and found the large kok unattractive as well. I sought out good looking FH's without it and there are many so you should not have a problem. The head thing will grow on you in time lol. Still to this day and I believe it to be because I had so much experience with other fish and transitioned to FH's. I appreciate them all, and kok is not the #1 thing I look for or even seek. Rather the over all appearance is much more important! Flowerhorns were meant to be and are still considered a fang shi fish, so to hold true to that when viewing a fish. It should flow nicely and be very eye pleasing from on end to the next. Just like a good piece of art;)
I would strat you search with Aquabid, Aquaticwonderland.com, and the flowerhorn forums on the net. If you use Aquabid there are many good sellers there just make sure you check the reps because there are also many low lifes. The flowerhorn forums are good places to ask about a seller before buying a fish. If you need some help bro hit me up I would be more than happy to lend a had good luck and let us know what you end up getting:popcorn:

Thanks Bastardfish. I'm just gonna keep searching locally and on Aquabid from time to time. There is a kind of a China town here with a shop that has a huge fish dept that not many people know about. I know that he has had fry and traded in adults in the past. I'm going to check it out in a couple days. I'll take pics and get some feedback. I'm glad I'm not the only person not so stoked about the huge head. I just dig the multitude of colors and their gruf attitudes so whatever I get will grow on me I suppose. It sucks having an up and running empty tank though. Thanks for the advice.

I PERSONALLY LOVE THE KOK.AND I AGREE.the color should flow almost as if it were drawn(so to speak)or air brushed.take your time and find just the right one for you.you will love them.very beautiful.nice choice:headbang2

Check out Kings Discus and QT aquarium in Seattle's Chinatown. I'm not a flowerhorn guy, but they have a lot of expensive flowerhorns. (I know nothing of flowerhorn "quality" so I just go off price.)

one last piece of advice bro
with FH you get what you pay for and while it can sometimes seem hard to shell out the cash for a $200 dollar or so fish when you are used to the normal $20-30 cichlids. However in the end you will see your money was well spent and well worth it. I look at this just like a dog. A good breed will run you a few hundred or even a grand, but it is a investments and you will enjoy it long term paying it off:)

A lot of people opt for the cheap $5 crap fry and end up getting what they pay for. Than are never correctly exposed to the wonder that is true flowerhorn fish keeping. This sector of the hobby will open up so many doors for you and the possibility are almost endless. Not to mention depending on how hard the bug bites you lol. Flowerhorn are the only freshwater fish keep in the aquaria that can take you to the next level and allow you to compete with. No other fish allows the owner to get in this interactive level with their fish. Hell bro I have been keeping fish for over 16 years now and I almost jumped out of the hobby 5 years ago when I felt I was at a dead end and had done it all. I have these wonderful fish to thank for the resurrection of my enthusiasm. Also gave me the needed break from the fish I kept for so many years so that now I once again appreciate them all and that is a beautiful thing! Good luck and come on over to flowerhornrusforum.com hang with the big dogs hit me up again if you should need anything
