Hey guys I've been trying to pair up Jags and fell in love with a flowerhorn they were selling for only 14.99$ at my LFS so I had to get him.
Well it seems as though my FH has taken a liking to my female jag.

I have seen a confirmed photo of a jag flowerhorn cross so I know it's possible.

This is more of a behavioral questions. My female Jag has a territory of a bunch or rocks in a cave arrangements in the center of the tank. She never seems to come out of it except for feeding.
Everytime my flowerhorn goes near to "check her out" she comes out with mout wide open then they go into the back and forth dance, never actually locking lips and then they both do the Cichlid shimmy moving in an "S" like fashion and the flowerhorn leaves.
The weird thing about all this is that it happens through openings in the cave system and the flowerhorn never actually dares to enter it.

Anybody have any insight on this type of behavior? It has been going on for at least a week and half now...

Well, it seems to me, that your tank must be big enough for both of them, and that the jag has its territory, and is protecting it from the flowerhorn.

If I was to guess I'd say your jag is bigger than the flowerhorn?
They do the s-shape and back and forth flaring to size eachother up, and it seems the jag is winning

Pugnacious cichlid females rareley go after a mate that they can beat up.

Interesting, that's really good to know. The Jag is slightly larger than the flowerhorn. Everything you said makes sense, then weird thing is that when the Jag comes out to feed the flowerhorn chases her away.

i tried to put a female jag with my fat female flowerhorn. the flowerhorn beat the jag up real good. had to take her out :\
