Doing water changes
I know floerhorns are crossbreeds of fish but why are they so expensive? And why do people pay SOOOOOOmuch for these fish even when the coloring is not nice? there are some that are beuatiful but others that are plain ugly. never quite understood so I gottta ask.

because people will pay anything for something they think is "cool", and i think they are mainly produced overseas. i say stay away from hybrids period.

Just popular fish, much like the dats are I'd imagine.

Although some can be very attractive looking fish.

If you buy them small and get lucky you can get some that grow out to be a vey neat looking fish at not overly high prices, I have one that I paid $15 for at about 2 inches, and got really lucky with he grew out and is no about 8" and beatiful red orange and yellow with shiny blue pearls all over! I see fish similiar to him selling in auctions and in flowerhorn forums for around $150-300 all day long... crazy!

And it bred with my really brightly colored red blood parrot, I am working on growing out their fry right now! Should be a neat experience!

I guess I'm not promoting the "stopping of hybrids" but I am not realeasing them into the wild, and no matter what the will be around unless everyone kept species specific tanks! I am keeping them for my ornamental use for the beautifull creatures I find them to be, I dont need my pet to have a scientific name! :) Just for my viewing pleasures!

my pair of cents!

I found mine when he was just a little baby, and got him for $9.99. He's almost 15" now and the coolest fish I have. If you can find a few cheap ones, pick some up and see if you're lucky. If not, just pay for one you like.

Thanks!! I got totally lucky with this guy, the right place at the right time. A LFS near me had 30+ of them one day, so I bought the biggest one. He was already turning red, but the rest of his siblings were still greyish. The employee was kinda pissed I got him, cause she said she was gonna snag him:)!! I went back a month or so later and they still had quite a few of them, but the prices were now between $75-$125 depending on the size and coloration. None were nearly as big as mine, or as pretty, so I got a hell of a deal!!:naughty: If you have the chance to grab a cheap small one, get it just to see how it turns out!!

Yes. not all FHs are ugly bro. Although, I have to agrree with you, there are some ugly ones. And there are ppl out there who, have bad tastes in our opinions, would pay for those FHs.But maybe they see something about it they like.

The prices are high because not all FHs grow up to look nice with a big head. It takes time and room to grow one out so a bigger one with pretty looks would cost more. FHs at lfss are ones you take chances with when you buy em. You take all the time growing them up and they might not turn out the way you want because not all FHs look the same; even if theyre siblings.. But they can look good if from good parents. Some better than others.

So when you see a FH being bought for a high price, that would mean the buyer sees something in the fish that he would like about his FH because not all FHs are the same like pure breeds. Theyre like chicks. Theyre all different in their own ways.

Theyre also addicting.. I just wanted to raise a fry to adult too. And I did. But it got me to a point now that Im buying a couple of hundred dollars for one fish. I'll share my juvinle to show you why ppl like FHs... What pure breed cichlid can look like this?

And they get better as they grow up.
