Hello,

I ve just adquired my first flowerhorn, i have similiar fish like midas and trimac but this is my first FH. What i would like to know is how to distinguish sex between FH, at the petstore there where 2 FH for sale, both around 1,5 in or so, i wanted a male i and picked the one with more pointed dorsal fins and kind of slimer body... however the other FH was more colorful (more red in it) and had somewhat bigger eyes, the pet owner told me the latter one was probably the male but i followed "my instinct" and picked the other one... :/ I wonder if there is any way to diferenciate sexs at this size and if there is what clues should i follow? (i was particularly reluctant about the color because usually the males are more colofull and still i picked the less red colored fish based more on "his body shape")...

I thank you in advance for any advises,

When i have the oportunity i will try to put some pics,

Thx

very hard to size when young. from my experience males tend to be bigger, sometimes have a larger forhead (hump), and longer fins. i've also notice many females have a darkspot on their dorsal fin (depends on what type of FH) best why i know of sexing FH gender is to look for the egg tube...

Hi again,

first of all thx for the advises m8s

I am sorry but i did a mistake when i refered to the size of the FH (here in Portugal we use a diferent metric system and i did a wrong conversion from centimetres to inches), so it is not 1,5 in (like i said previously) but it is around 3 in (around 5-6 maximum)...

About the fish he doesnt have any hump, he has kind of long fins, but i cant describe the egg tube :/...

I just took some pics i hope they can help:
