Hey all i was just at my lfs and seen the nicest flowerhorn ever.... was wondering how big of a tank im going to need and aproximatly how big they get and what are some good tank mates?

Flower horn grow extremely fast, and can get 12 inches the first year, most will be slightly smaller than that, but they get big.

They are super aggressive, while there is always exceptions to the rules the general idea is that you cant keep them with any other fish. Even super large tanks. I had two, and have a six foot tank, i tried to put one in there and it fought with every other fish in the tank, they were african cichlids and quite aggressive themselves.

I love the look of a single large FH in a show tank, they are so colorful and have beautiful fins and personality. I would house a single flowerhorn in a 75 gallon tank, as a juvie it can be in a slightly smaller tank, like a 55 or 70 tall, but as the fish grows it should go into a 75. Remember get only one or they will kill eachother, it usually does not matter if they are male/male or male/female, they will often try to kill eachother. I have heard of some limeted success keeping them with blood parrots, mostly people who were trying to breed them, the idea is the blood parrot can breed with it and if it dies its a inexpensive fish to replace. I find that idea, kind of repulsive, i dont believe in throw away fish, so i kept mine by themselves. I had one in a 72 bowfront and one in a 75 gallon, they liked it and grew from 3 inches to six in about 6 to 8 weeks. like i said super fast growth rates.

Awsome thank you very much.... i put mine in a 180 hes abou 3 inch and pretty fat haha i have him in there with a tiger oscar i picked up to he looked awsome and hes about 3 give or take as well and seem to be getting along great so far....what is the best food that i can give him i have been feeding him hikari chiclid gold and spectrum thera + A are they good for him?

a 75 gallon for one individual specimen will work for some time, but long term you'll want something bigger, especially if you want tankmates of some kind

hey guys., got myself a little bit of a situation here., i got a male fh which is 8 inches big and almost a year old., i also have a female fh which about 10 inches., she really is huge compared to the male and she s already ready to breed., i know this because her breeding tube is already out and ready to lay some eggs., my problem is that when i try to put them together in the same tank, the female would beat the hell out of the male., any advice or ideas?

no i dont know what type of flowerhorn i have the guy at the fish store just told me it was a flowerhorn and i thought that it looked really nice..

flowerhorns are very beautiful.i've got mine in with my giant gourmi.he's 23 inches and has lost most of his aggressiveness.they don't even look twice at each other.
