fluadised sand filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If sized correctly for the aquarium, they work real well.

Just like all biological filters, it will take several weeks before it will function properly. THe bacteria will need time to establish it self.

I have used larger models made by rainbow/lifegaurd on feeder aquariums with real heavy bio load and had pretty decent water quality.

I have been using fluidized bed filters for years and find them extreamly reliable. I first started using them on my marine predator tanks and am now also using them on my fresh as well. I find they are low maintenance and very affordable. In my opinion they are best biological filter avaliable. When completely cycled ammonia and nitrite don't stand a chance!

Also, if you add a little sand from an established fbf, you can speed up the cycling period.

I have used corallife, merlin and rainbow fbf's. I would reccomend the rainbow one. Rainbows are avaliable in 300, 600, and 900 gallon models and are the easiest to maintain. I personally didn't have very good experiences with the other ones. From what I remember, I think the rainbows are also more economically priced.

I just hooked up a FBF with an 802 powerhead to my 30g fw along with a aquaclear 30.I have 18 1" electric blues and 2 1" electric Yellows. I went to a good fish store and they did not recommend using a fbf on any tank. they said it was old technology and if they were that good, then why aren't they selling a lot more of those than wet-dry's?
