I'm not ready to try this yet, because I want to try algae scrubbers first. I like that idea more...

However, I wanted to post this interesting idea that I thought up.

To maximize proper and even flow within the tube, I would personally use two separate tubes side by side going down the middle of the cylinder, instead of having the tank input coming through the side at the bottom.

Or even have them both flow into the same tube at the top immediately before entering the cylinder.

Or you could have two FBF side by side, one flowing into the other. Or if you have the space, have a super tall regular FBF... Maybe 6' tall would do the trick?

Though if you do end up doing any variation on this concept, remember that the oxygen levels in the tank are going to be severely depleted, causing a need for overcompensation in the form of lots and lots of air bubblers in the tank.

I built this one about 10 or more years ago from plans in FAMA magazine. It is about 4ft tall using 8" diameter clear PVC.
For me it is a biofilter and reactor to buffer alkalinity. I use sand grain size aragonite as biomedia, which over time dissolves from acids produced by fish urine and other types of metabolism. I had it under pressure at first, but found even with a check valve, if there was a power outage, media would back siphon and plug the influent pipe. An open top made maintenance and adding replacement media much easier.
