Fluidized bed filter, good on ray tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great bio filters yes.... but i keep reading that if they are shut down for any real period of time(power outage) then all the bacteria die within it fast.

Id make sure you had another main source of bio filtration that can handle the extra load

I thought I also read that they are great filters but if a power outage hits n kills the BB that it turns into a "Ticking Time Bomb".
Can someone w/more info on these correct me if I'm wrong :D??

Came for this

yes, they are very good filters, but the risk is, if power fails, they "collapse" pretty quickly and the toxicity is then released into the water.

What I do, when power fails for a long time, is unplug them and rinse the sand, starint the filter again, as if it were a new filter.

I figured this is the best resolution... So if the set up has a Sump, and a good size canister and the Power went out just as you got to work, for a few hours (per say)... do you think the Tankmates would be fine if you came home to a Normal working Set up (never noticed the power went off, ie: of course).

I guess im just trying to think of a worst scenario as im so skeptical about adding one... only reason I battle with it is I hear/read they are another good option for crystal clear water (aside from a good filter)

Thanks n I hope some of my Q's are helping the OP too:D

I'm very curious to this sort of filter..

How does it exactly work? anyone have an idea/skymatic? lol

I have a 110gal sump for my 280gal tank.... I know its big enough for my rays and bioload, but adding one would just make it better im sure. OR is it really worth the money? I looked up the filter on youtube. whats the sand actually doing? whats the gph back into the tank, or is there one?

Interesting and thoughtful thread.
