Fluidized Bed Filter Idea

well i really feel like making something so i decided to try a FBF. For the design im going to make a plexi glass box with to bulk heads at the top. one will have a tube (pvc) running through it to the bottom of the box, this will be powered buy siphon. then the other bulk head will be attacked to a power head that will be sucking water from the box to the tank. as for media im thinking some kind of sand, maybe play sand or pool filter sand (which i can just take out of my tank). on and there will also be a sponge attached to the intake so no large partials get in there. i wanna make all the pipes out of pvc so i can hang it off the back of the tank like a HOB. i attacked a picture of the design, to decrease confusion. well there it is tell me what you think. so good or no?

looks good, but I think it will work better with the pump before it instead of after.
 
you run the risk of sucking sand into your powerhead with it afterwards. Pumps typically are not that good at generating suction as compared to output pressure also, so I think if you can make it work with the pump before instead of after, you'll be much further ahead.
 
ok thanks ill try and mess around with the power head to see if i can get it to be first. was also thinking if i did make the power head first i could just make it over flow back into the tank that way if i need to do maintenance i would have easy access
