I was thinking about upgrading from an HOB to a fluidized bed filter on my 55. I was thinking about the Pentair Aquatics FBF 300 which is rated for 300 gallons. Since customer service at Big Al's told me that it does not come with media, I was wondering if plain washed playsand would do the trick? It seems to be the same thing as they are selling for 10 dollars (not to mention extra shipping). I also run peat and a piece of cuttlebone in my tanks. Can I just throw a bags of purigen or peat and the cuttlebone on top? Is there a minimum flow rate that I should push through the sand? I currently have an AC70 (400gph) that I'd like to use, but I am concerned about the resistance decreasing my flow and not getting full fluidization. Thanks for your help guys.

The one I have has a little bit of sand still in it. It is the size of pool filter sand which is quite a bit larger. In my area it is just over two bucks for 50 pounds.

So pool filter sand? I'll have to make a note of that.

On a side note, I have to call BS on Big Als. I got a hold of the packing list for the filter and it does come with media. Additionally, it seems that I may have to reduce my flow below 400 gph. They seem to recommend 175 gph.

As for the other media. Maybe I'll turn my HOB into a peat filter.
