had an idea for a large fluidized bed filter but wasn`t sure if it would work ok was going to use a 4" pipe 5 feet long cap top and bottom and have a 1.25" pipe going down from top to approx 4" from bottom to agitate sand with a 1.25" oulet on side approx 2" from top totally sealed filled from top then valves fitted to top and outlet to regulate flow would it work okay or would i need to make any adjustments to pipe size etc please?
was using acrylic clear tub for approx 3ft of filter rest just normal soil pipe type as keeps cost to reasoble level
cheers for any help did draw it out but couldn`t figure out how to put up on here:(

Hey guy.

Yep, I think your going to have to reduce the interior pipe (too much flow)or go larger on the outside. (you can't reduce flow in a large pipe and keep the needed pressure up).

You did mean tube (tub), right?;)

If your wanting to save money, use two 6" pieces of acrylic pipe, one at the top and one in the middle, just to see how things are going and the rest ABS.

Remember that this has to come apart for the occasional cleaning.

yes tube do you mean smaller im diameter or length please?and would this be ok to use as top so can be unscrewed to clean out http://www.screwfix.com/prods/22628/Plumbing/Soil-Vent/Black-Screw-On-End-Cap not sur eif it would take pressure?and if i used wider pipe outside still need to reduce internal pipe size please?
cheers for help

Smaller in diameter (center pipe).

W/O actually seeing one, I can't be sure but it looks like it would hold this pressure (maybe a little silicone on the threads for a sea (if it doesn't react with the plastic)).

You don't have to reduce internal pipe if you double extenal pipe size.

1.25" interior pipe 8" exterior pipe.

If you have a good size air compressor (shop type) I run a .250" to the bottom or thru the side to initialize the filter (that way you don't need as powerful of a water pump).

have just an air line or stone as well?so if i do go for 4" it`ll be .75" pipe just not sure on pipe i`ll be getting depends on cost lol and what does .250" mean please?still

still haven`t given up on water barrel filter just space is all got a small pond sump filter but really feel i need some more filtration as i`ll be running a 2600 gph pump from pond

.250" means a 1/4 inch hole...
you dont need an airline or stone in it, what dr joe says to do with the compressor is only to be able to start the filter more easily (a burst of air will fluidize the sand)

^^^Thank You^^^, that's correct.

Have you considered several bio-towers to save space?
