i was seriously considering using a fbf for my soon to be ray tank untill i visited the lfs where the most knowledgeable fish keeper in the land told me they aren't worth their weight as far as a filter is concerned. does anyone here have any input? or can anyone prove him right or wrong?

They can be a pain in the fanny to set and this leads a lot of people to complain about them but they DO work and work very well for thier size. My only complaint about them is that the BB (benificial bacteria) tend to die off VERY quickly if the water flows interupted. Even more so than with conventional media in a cannister.

how fast are you talking? i tend to shut my pumps off when i feed sometimes. only for at most an hour though

Im interested planning on running one of these with my fx5 for my 180

An hour would probubly be fine but I wouldn't want to push it much past that point. However once a FBF is ballanced and running it's never a good idea to shut it down and re-start it over and over again. Doing so tends to blow a small amount of the sand into the tank each time... upsetting the delicate ballance.

If your using a FBF with the FX5 make sure that your running it off of a seperate pump.

ah gotcha...a guy offered me a lifeguard fb900 fbf for $50 today and a filter (i'm not sure what yet. he couldn't describe it well) that's got side by side stacks about 3.5' tall, fill em with carbon and put it inline with the return for $75. sound like a good deal? and what is the second one i'm searching now but can't find much

most dont run carbon but most fbf run around 65ish so i would say a decent deal. And i dont plan on using the fx5 as the pump too much pressure.

Sounds like part of a Rainbow lifeguard system to me. Not a bad price but personally I'd find a better use for them than carbon.

yeah...i doubt i'd use em for carbo...but i was just wondering what they were...i'd like to do a lil research before buying...azfishfool the fb900 is a lil over 100buks so it's definitely a good deal just wanted to make sure they worked as well as i thought they did
