I wanted to know what you all think of these filters as a biological filter for big tanks.
Nobody seems to mention them in any of the threads on filtration.
Do many of you use them??

because they can be a hassle and a PITA. But other than that they make excellent bio filters, and can be done for fairly cheap. Since each grain of sand is suspended in constant motion, then the entire surface area of the sand would be available for the biological bed, and in a larger FBF that is a lot of surface area.

The problem is when the power goes out...it may poison your entire system.

Its a risk versus reward thing. They can be a tremendous bio filter though.

Am fully aware of that! Am looking for one of those huge ones....

Pentair make great FBFs I have a FB900 which works very well.
I have also made one myself but I am not confident it will work very well.
The PVC is not clear so I am unsure of the fluidization inside the PVC pipe.
I will start it once I get back from holidays that way I will be able to ckeck it everyday.
My next project is to make one out of acrylic sheet or pipe that way I can observe the sands fluidization.

The use up a lot of oxygen too......... A wet/dry actually adds it and doesn't have a lot of the other issues a FB does.

If you go FB, make sure you have backup power and extra aeration..... In that situation they can be very good bio-filters.

i loved mine... gonna set up another one again...
