i have in the past....sand with up flow...very good bio filter....
the only complaint is that you need to watch the flow rate.....too much and the sand goes into the tank....too little the bed doesnt remain 'fluidized'
I have the lifegaurd models and love them just match with recommended pump and your set great filters.... only flaw is when you shut them down can be a pain to restart them.....
I use a DIY model from plans in FAMA, beside the obvious biological application, I use aragonite for part on the media which ads buffering capacity. If it doesn't come with one, adding a check valve to the line in helps to keep the media from back syphoning.
Once its up and running thats about it.
Except because I use aragonite as a buffer, I need to ad more as it dissolves, with nomal inert sand this wouldn't be the case.
, but with an open top, I just pour some more aragonite on the tube.
If there is a power outage, and back syphonage occurs(because no check valve), it can be a hastle to unplug the influent pipe of sand. Since I changed to open top, and because it's about 3"tall, this hasn't happened.
