Is there pretty much no maintenance on a fluidized sand filter? Any inputs from anyone who has one?

I dont use a prefilter so any dirt will just work its way through.

I'm thinking of putting one inline from the return from sump back to tank... so water will be prefiltered already...
But from the description of how these work, the sand is constantly "cleaning itself"... just wondered to what extent this is true....

Mines about a year old. You can see the sand, looks fine. Makes me wonder if it does anything. lol

they are mainly for biological filtration. The sand might get a little darker from the bacteria, but it shouldn't get all that dirty.
